Life as an Analyst

Analysts are typically recent undergraduates and the majority of entry opportunities on offer during milkround are for analyst roles. Some firms offer varying entry points for PhDs and further details of this can be found in the firms profile information. 
The roles in which analysts work can be broadly split into 5 main categories:
1.  Research - you will be required to absorb and assimiliate financial information quite quickly and use the information you compile to value companies and stocks accurately
2.  Corporate Finance - Corporate Financiers spend a great deal of time understanding a marketplace and modelling and forecasting the performance of the major companies within it
3.  Sales and Trading - The sales and trading work can be on behalf of the bank - known as proprietary trading, or on the behalf of investors
4.  Asset Management - Assisting with the investment and management of large funds of capital.
5.  Corporate Banking - also known as 'relationship banking' the role involves managing the contact and relationship with large clients
6.  Operations - this is often referred to as a 'back office' or middle office' role

Assessment
Working days are quite long
but this can give you a good chance to learn the investment banking field and bond with people whom you will work with later. Being an analyst is one of the best ways to break into a very good field. The return on investment from being a good analyst can be over 50 times what you actually get paid and it is the ability to make a positive contribution and have it evidenced in real terms which proves attractive for many would be analysts.
